About this record

Milwaukee Female Seminary was one of the first school's in the nation to adopt a program in domestic science for women, largely based on the writings of noted teacher, Catherine Beecher. Opened in 1848, the school was one of the pet projects of Beecher and her educational association who helped to fund schools for women in the West. In 1853, the name of the school changed to the Milwaukee Female College, and changed once again in 1895 when it was united with Downer College. This article looks at the development of the school and its connection with Beecher.
