About this record

Baseball teams began forming in small communities across Wisconsin in the mid- to late-nineteenth century. Competing for fun and bragging rights against neighboring teams, these baseball games became more formalized after World War I. This uniform was for the official team of the Wittenberg Athletic Association, the Wittenberg Grays, formed in 1922, and was worn by Shawano County businessman J. William Gates. Gates had played in town teams for many years prior to the establishment of the official team and was considered one of the better players, well into his 40s.
