About this record
After resigning his commission as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1945, Joseph McCarthy launched a campaign for the Senate seat of Robert M. La Follette, Jr. in 1946. Gaining the support of the Republican state party, McCarthy narrowly won the nomination. He went on to defeat his Democratic opponent, Howard MacMurray, in the general election by a two-to-one margin. This campaign brochure features quotes and excerpts from newspapers that supported McCarthy in the 1946 campaign.Citation
