About this record
One of the first fish hatcheries in the United States opened in Madison in 1887 (the journalist writing in 1922 was mistaken). While somewhat experimental at first, fish hatcheries soon proved a fairly effective means to replenish fish in Wisconsin's lakes and rivers. By 1922, Wisconsin had twelve hatcheries planting upwards of 100 million fish each year.Citation
