About this record

In 1960, fearing the effects of a nuclear bomb on nearby Chicago, Paul and Edith Sobel of Racine constructed a fallout shelter, as did thousands of other Americans. They stocked it with provisions intended to keep their family alive until radiation would have dissipated and they could emerge from their sanctuary. The links below take you to images of the canned food and other items that the government recommended Americans provide for themselves in case of a nuclear attack.
