About this record

The war in Vietnam was a defining experience for millions of Americans in the 1960s and 1970s, changing the ways that many viewed themselves, the government, war, and the world. More than 57,000 Wisconsin residents served in southeast Asia, many of whom recorded their experiences in letters and diaries. Voices from Vietnam, part of the Voices of the Wisconsin Past series, tells the story of the war through the letters of 92 Wisconsin men and women. They cover a wide range of experiences and reflect many different opinions and attitudes. Excerpts from some of those letters by Wisconsin men and women are provided here, including the letters of two Red Cross nurses. The complete text of Voices from Vietnam is available for purchase from the Society.
