About this record
Wartime defense needs put a strain on the resources available to the average American. State Councils of Defense organized committees to educate consumers on the changes and choices that would have to be made in response to shortages. In Wisconsin, the Consumer Interests Committee organized county consumer councils and organizations to educate people on basic cost- and product-saving measures. Citizens were urged to plant gardens, carpool, preserve food, and learn some general home maintenence. Classes were organized specifically for women in home and car repair. County organizers were given these instruction and suggestions on how best to get consumers involved in more conscious buying.Citation
