About this record

Although political cartoons have appeared in some newspapers since the 18th century, they did not become widely popular until after the Civil War. Political cartoons combine the political and the artistic, presenting a particular point of view or story through symbolism and caricature. This La Follette cartoon, created by John T. McCutcheon, appeared in the Chicago Daily Tribune on December 29, 1911. This cartoon reflects La Follette's work on railroad legislation.
