About this record
Excavated by museum archaeologists near La Crosse in 1989, this Oneota ceramic vessel is typical of pottery styles used over 500 years ago. Oneota Tradition peoples inhabited much of the Midwest during the centuries just before the arrival of European explorers. They usually settled in small farming villages beside lakes and rivers where they planted gardens and harvested fish from nearby waters.Citation
