About this record

Wisconsin's first scientist, Increase Lapham (1811-1875) wrote the first book published in Wisconsin, made the first detailed and accurate map of the state, and investigated Wisconsin's effigy mounds, native trees and grasses, climatic patterns, and geology. He was instrumental in the founding of Milwaukee and the creation of several educational and cultural institutions that still survive today. He is show here examining a meteorite that fell in 1868.
