About this record

Although this article mainly reviews some information already available elsewhere on the underground railroad, on pages 2-3 it prints a long letter from Mrs. A. H. Woodruff, at whose home the fugitive slave Caroline Quarlls was hidden for two weeks in the summer of 1842. It also summarizes the Joshua Glover incident and the opposition that anti-slavery activists often encountered.
