About this record

Chrysostom Verwyst (1841-1925) was ordained a Catholic priest in 1865 and until 1882 was assigned to various missions and parishes throughout the state. In 1882 he was appointed parish priest and missionary to the Ojibwe Indians in the Bayfield-Ashland area, serving in this capacity until his retirement in 1912. In this memoir he describes arriving in America, pioneer life in Brown county, the Civil War home front, and his religious work in northwestern Wisconsin and on Lake Superior.
