About this record

This very rare life of Jesus in Ottawa was written by Fr. Frederick Baraga in the winter of 1835-1836 while he was living at LaPointe; he had it printed the following winter while in Paris raising funds for his Lake Superior mission. This copy is inscribed on the front free endpaper, "Presented to Mad. Laframboise by the Revd. Mons. Baraga -- Mackinac, August 26th, 1837". It contains the rare map of the Holy Land with place names in Ottawa. We've included it here for students who wish to compare Ottawa and Ojibwe; no English translation of it has ever been published. This is one of several works in or about American Indian languages to be found at Turning Points in Wisconsin History. Readers should note that this is a historical document rather than a modern one, and that it was produced by a white observer rather than a native speaker; students wishing to study the language should rely on materials produced by the tribal language office.
