About this record

In 1947 the Wisconsin Legislature authorized a committee to inspect state-run institutions such as prisons, reform schools, hospitals, and work farms and to recommend improvements. This 1955 report is the first to give a state-wide overview of all such facilities and is based on visits made over the preceding 18 months. It describes in significant detail the Correctional Home for Women (Taycheedah), State School for Boys (Waukesha), State School for Girls (Oregon), State Prison (Waupun) , State Reformatory (Green Bay), Central State Hospital (Waupun), Mendota State Hospital (Madison), Northern Colony and Training School (Chippewa Falls), Educational State School for the Deaf (Delavan), State School for the Visually Handicapped (Janesville), State Sanatorium (Wales), Grand Army Home for Veterans (King), Wisconsin Child Center (Sparta), Workshop for the Blind (Milwaukee), and various other state-run institutions.
