About this record

This brief paper was read on October 25, 1899, in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, at the third annual meeting of the Wisconsin State Federation of Women¿s Clubs. Its author has not been identified beyond "Mrs. Thomas H. Brown of Milwaukee," but she may have been Alice L. Brown, wife of the city tax commissioner (the only Thomas H. Brown in the 1900 census of Milwaukee). After briefly reviewing American women factory workers since 1780, Brown focuses on working conditions of Wisconsin women in the 1890s and proposes remedies for their welfare.
