About this record

Attending Joy Camps on Lake Raymond, near Hazelhurst in Oneida County, Wisconsin, was a life-changing experience for Sue Ann Hackett. The two boxes containing her scrapbooks, photographs, memorabilia, newspaper clippings, songbooks and correspondence shown here document the training given to young girls in northwoods summer camps at the middle of the 20th century. Interspersed among the original documents are transcriptions and notes made by Ms. Hackett ca. 2010. Joy Camps was operated by Barbara Ellen Joy, who served as president of the American Camping Association, and Marjorie Camp. An album entitled Official Photographs depicts the camps during the early 1940s, and two boxes of papers and scrapbooks collected by Hackett document them during the summers of 1949-1951, when she attended. Barbara Ellen Joy's book, Camp Craft: A Manual for Leaders Responsible for Organization of Camp Craft in the Summer Camp (Minneapolis, 1955), is included elsewhere at Turning Points in Wisconsin History.
