About this record

French officials occasionally investigated the number, location and conditions among the tribes with whom they traded throughout the Great Lakes and upper Mississippi Valley. We give here an anonymous French report from 1736 written at Michilimackinac; a similar English one, composed in Green Bay in 1761, can be seen in Lieut. James Gorrell's journal elsewhere in Turning Points. They provide isolated statistical snapshots of the Wisconsin Indian nations that can be found nowhere else.
