About this record
Born about 1785, Souligny was for many years the principal war chief of the Menominees. Although the Menominee nation remained officially neutral in the war of 1812, he was one of many warriors who fought independently alongside Tecumseh on the side of the British. This portrait was painted at Keshena, Wisconsin, in February of 1858, when he was about 73 years old; he died at the Great Falls of the Wolf River in December, 1864.Citation
