About this record

This engraving from 1703 shows how Iroquois warriors surprised enemy tribes while they were in the field. It is from the travel memoir of Baron Louis Armand de Lom d'Arce Lahontan, who visited visited Sauk, Potawatomi, and Menominee villages near Green Bay in 1688. He ascended the Fox River, made the portage to the Wisconsin in October, and went on to the Mississippi. Along the way he encountered many refugee Indians who had fled to Wisconsin to escape Iroquois attacks.
