About this record

In this engraving, 500 Iroquois lie in wait for the French troops under Jacques René de Brisay, Marquis de Denonville. Denonville spent the summer of 1687 in a vain attempt to subdue the Seneca and other Five Nations warriors around modern Rochester, New York. By this time, many of the eastern tribes of New York, Ohio and Michigan had fled to Wisconsin to escape the war.
