About this record

Founded as school for girls in 1848, the Milwaukee Female Academy reorganized as a female college in 1850 under the direction of Catharine Beecher. The college provided a complete course of study at a time when few opportunities for higher education existed for women. In this article, Mrs. Samuel Buck recalls her years at the school, which later became part of Milwaukee-Downer College.
