About this record

James Duane Doty first came to Wisconsin on an exploratory expedition with Governor Lewis Cass in 1820. He soon settled in Green Bay and served as a delegate to Congress from Wisconsin Territory before becoming its second governor in 1841. Doty was also instrumental in the selection of Madison as the capital of Wisconsin. Stevens Point artist George H. Patch painted this portrait of Doty.
