About this record

Austin E. Quinney, brother of John Quinney, was a leader in the Stockbridge tribe's move from New York to Wisconsin in the 1820s. Quinney helped negotiate a series of treaties to secure and protect land for the tribe, who were under constant threat of dispossession. The Stockbridge and Munsee tribes moved to a reservation in Shawano County in 1854. Dr. Amos C. Hamlin Jr. painted this portrait of Quinney in 1849.
