About this record
Lincoln last visited Wisconsin in 1859, when he was being floated as a potential presidential candidate by the Republican Party. Madison banker Lucien Hanks (1838-1925), then a young clerk visiting Janesville, was staying at the same home where Lincoln spent the night after delivering a speech. Sleeping arangements were tight, and the two ended up sharing the same bed -- a practice quite common among 19th-century travelers. In this article Hanks recalls his difficulty getting to sleep as Lincoln threw elbows and snored through the night.Citation
