About this record
Satterlee Clark was an early settler of Dodge County intimate with both white and Indian residents. In this speech given at Portage in 1879, he recalls the construction of Fort Winnebago, his own activities during the Black Hawk War, and the exploits of his friend Pierre Paquette (1796-1836). In 1818 Paquette had established an American Fur Co. post at Portage where he charged fees for transporting goods between the Fox and Wisconsin Rivers. He also interpreted for the Ho-Chunk at treaty councils in the 1830's, and his physical size, strength and personal integrity became the source of legends in southern Wisconsin.Citation
