About this record

The arrival of the railroad in 1871 and the start of the mining boom in 1884 helped spur Ashland's economy. These bird's-eye view maps of the city from that time express the optimistic booster spirit that could be found in many burgeoning Wisconsin cities at the same stage of development. Also included here is a bird's-eye view of Hurley, the Wisconsin community at the center of the mid-1880's iron mining economy.
