About this record

William Dempster Hoard (1836-1918) was instrumental in facilitating the shift from wheat to dairy farming by advocating the use of silos, refridgerated shipping, and government inspection of dairy products. His magazine, Hoard's Dairyman, reached tens of thousands of farmers nationwide. He also served as Wisconsin's governor, 1889-1891. In this letter to a meeting of the Wisconsin Dairymen's Association he reviews conditions at the time he and a few associates tried to convert Wisconsin farmers "from the plow to the cow" and explains some of the techniques they used.
