About this record

With the rise of reform movements in the antebellum years, some women found a voice and a place for themselves as journalists and editors of reform newspapers. Emma Brown, sole editor and publisher of The Chief, a temperance paper begun with her brother Thurlow Brown, was among the first women publishers in Wisconsin. This article looks at some of the most prominent and successful women involved in journalism in nineteenth-century Wisconsin.
