About this record

Wisconsin Dells remains the state's archetypical tourist destination, but other communities were also attracted recreational travelers. In the 1880's, the town of Monona, across the lake from downtown Madison, offered the Tonyawatha House resort for visitors staying in the capital city. Those who traveled to Wisconsin Dells went originally to witness the extraordinary natural grandeur of its streams and cliffs, popularized through the stereographic and postcard views of H.H. Bennett. Later, Ho-Chunk residents offered an introduction to their ceremonial and artistic traditions that drew thousands of visitors.
