About this record

Efforts to curb the consumption of alcohol were a driving force behind many other reform organizations in Wisconsin. Members of the temperance movement in Milwaukee produced the first reform newspaper in the state, the Wisconsin Temperance Journal. This first issue shown here, printed in April of 1840, featured the constitution of the society, meeting minutes, and assorted articles related to the problem of alcohol. Despite backing by some of Milwaukee's most prominent citizens, the paper was short-lived and without a successor in the antebellum years.
