About this record

One of Wisconsin's most important crops is cranberries, an agricultural commodity whose cultivation began in the mid-19th century. This 1875 article describes the origins of commercial cranberry harvesting in central Wisconsin, during the period when wheat was becoming unprofitable and dairy had not yet reached its pre-eminence. It describes the largest and most successful bogs, methods of harvesting, wages of workers (many of whom were Ho-Chunk Indians), and market value of the harvest.
