About this record

In 1847, a 25-year-old former slave from Virginia named Lewis Washington attempted to find a home in Wisconsin. He joined Waukesha abolitionists Sherman Booth and C.C. Olin in holding public meetings in southeastern Wisconsin. Olin here recounts their hostile reception in Racine County. Washington went on to settle in Wisconsin permanently.
